We see in Philippians chapter 1, how the apostle Paul shared that the work was difficult but he was grateful for the partnership with the other disciples in the church. Abraham helps us understand that without partnerships, the gospel work is not sustainable. How partnerships with others are a providence from God. Paul speaks of praying for the Philippians with joy. Abraham’s challenge to us: To focus on our partnerships through prayer, to remember that progress comes through perseverance, and that through our hardships God is advancing the gospel.

Risky Kindness - John Jacobs 03/29/26

This week in the Detroit Church of Christ, John Jacobs shares the lesson 'Risky Kindness'. John, reading from 2 Samuel 9, teaches us what Khesed (Grace/Kindness) is and how it was shown to Jonathan's son Mephibosheth by King David, at a time when Mephibosheth was in 'Lo Debar' (a place of hardship). David practiced irresponsible grace with Jonathan's son. David was less interested in Mephibosheth’s position and more concerned about his condition. Are we focusing on a person's position and title or the needs? John's challenge: When is the last time you practiced irresponsible grace with someone.

This week in the Detroit Church of Christ, Kyle Eastman shares the lesson 'Eye of the Beholder, What Are You Worth?' Reading from Ephesians 2, we see the why 'God made us alive in Christ', because of his great love for us. A love without prior conditions, but with the expectation we will respond with reciprocated love. We are attractive because God loves us. Kyle's challenge: What lies do you believe that have shaped your self-worth? And how has that impacted your life? The conclusion: Only God's opinion matters, not the opinion of the world around us.

Wells & Fences - Kyle Eastman 03/15/26

This week in the Detroit Church of Christ, Kyle Eastman shares the lesson 'Wells & Fences'. Reading from the book of Mark, Kyle talks about how the Pharisees made laws and traditions like ceremonial washing. They didn't care about the person's heart, but that is all God cares about. These can be 'fences' that will point people away from God. His challenge: For us to look at our rules and traditions or 'fences' of thinking. How we must be more accepting of others as we see the direction they are going. To share God's love unconditionally (like the wells of the desert shepherds) in order to draw people closer to God through a message of love and mercy.

How we must have a spirit of discipline, self-awareness, self-control, and then we will have self-worth. His challenge: That we are not a victim of the chaos of sin, but that we master the beast of sin in our lives.

Kyle reads scriptures from the books of Mark, James, and others as he describes what the Kingdom of God is like, and how it is different than the world we live in. How in our current world, is seems like things all around us are destructive, the same way a radioactive place destroys all life. As part of the Kingdom of God, we must live a life fighting the sin in our lives that is 'toxic' to our soul, and toxic to others. His challenge: What is the 'non-kingdom' identity with the greatest potential to take first place in your life? Are you focusing on Jesus first or just living for worldly things?

His challenge: We must be surrendered to God and anchored to his Word to fully know his heart and how much he loves us. How it is this level of deeply knowing God (Yada) that brings us the security and emotional connection that we all so deeply desire.

This week in the Detroit Church of Christ, Kyle Eastman shares the lesson 'The Healthy Fruit of a Careful Mind'. Reading from the books of John and Proverbs, Kyle explores how we can doubt the existence of God in our lives. How we handle that doubt is critical to our faith, that carefully working through our doubts of faith is called ‘Wisdom’. How we should be watchful of doubt based on fear, discouragement, anxiety, or pride, that can be corrosive to our faith. Most of all watchful of doubt that is simply a cover up of sin.
