Mishpat

Mishpat: Restorative Justice - Kyle Eastman 06/28/26

This week in the Detroit Church of Christ, Kyle Eastman shares a short lesson on 'Mishpat' and outlines how the church and each of us can serve those of need. Kyle, reading from Acts 2, reminds us how the early disciples 'gave to everyone who had need' and we must strive to do this as well. We see that the Old Testament word 'Mishpat', is more than charity. It is failing to care for the vulnerable and is a breakdown of justice. Our mission includes helping what is called the 'quartet of the vulnerable', widows, foreigners, orphans, and the poor.

Happy Princes and Samaritan Heroes - Kyle Eastman 10/05/25

This week in the Detroit Church of Christ, Kyle Eastman shares the lesson 'Happy Princes and Samaritan Heroes'. Reading from Luke 10, Kyle helps us to examine our hearts and consider: Are we like the priest and Levite, or are we like the Samaritan in the parable? Kyle teaches us the word Mishpat, the Hebrew word used over 300 times in the Bible. It is used to mean justice, but the full meaning is humility, mercy, love and compassion. His challenge: If we are indeed striving to be like Jesus, we cannot push helping those who are vulnerable and without to the side even though our lives are busy, but must make actively helping the vulnerable part of our Christian walk.
