News That Brings Joy - Olumide Faulkner 12/14/25

This week in the Detroit Church of Christ, Olumide Faulkner shares the lesson 'News That Brings Joy'. Reading from the book of Luke, Olumide helps us take a closer look at the coming of Jesus that would bring 'great joy', and two of the people who went looking for Jesus during his ministry. He asks: Why would each of them to go into a hostile environment looking for Jesus? The answer being they were humble and recognized that they were 'sinners', and that Jesus could save them from their lives of sin. This brought them the Joy mentioned by the angel in Luke 2. He asks, 'Do you feel this Joy? Olumide's challenge: Are you ready and equipped to stand before God like these people?

Reading from Proverbs and Isaiah, he reminds us that God gives vision to his people, and that our purpose is who we are, and our mission is what we do. That mission is to love our family, to love the lost, and to love the hurting even when you expect nothing in return. His question: 'What is your vision?'

Reading from the book of Acts, Mark helps us to see that God wants us to 'look to the past' as a way to keep His commands and promises in the forefront of our minds. He reminds us that the apostle Paul always closed with 'be on your guard', and how in times of change we must stay focused on following God.

He outlines how we often believe prayer is intuitive but it is not. He challenges us to carefully examine our actual needs and to be specific in our prayers. How when we pray for other people, we have to be thoughtful as to what do they really need. He reminds us that we must be faithful in God in order for Him to answer our prayers.

Kyle helps us to understand how important it is to have an attitude of humility so we can hear the truth about our lives from others. How living a life of lies is a trap. Kyle challenges us that we must also be courageous in delivering the truth to others. That it is the height of cruelty to not tell someone the truth because you make them comfortable in their sin.

Discipling - Mark Kang 06/22/25

Reading from 1st Timothy, Mark talks about we must be 'trained' to be godly, both for the present time and the time to come. He reminds us that there are three elements to successful discipling: Consistency, Transparency, and Accountability. That no one wants to stand before the judge unprepared. Mark's challenge to us is to be a person who is open, seeks the advice of others often, and is willing to be called higher.

This week in the Detroit Church of Christ, Mark Kang shares the lesson 'Walking the Path of Faith'. Mark, reading from Genesis, Romans, Hebrews, and James, looks at the life of Abraham. How Abraham is the father of faith, the trailblazer for faith in God. Mark asks if we are willing through our faith in God to live a life of uncertainty, a life of repentance and change, or simply a life of certainty stuck in our sin. How for us to grow, we must follow God through a faith based on Truth, Reason, and Obedience.
