ABOUT US

The Detroit Church of Christ bases all of its foundational beliefs on the Holy Scriptures. We believe the entire Bible to be the accurate, complete and inerrant Word of God. We strive to to teach our members to live by principals clearly delineated in the New Testament and supported in the Old Testament. The following is a summary of our basic beliefs.

There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.     Ephesians 4:4-6

One God
We believe that we are designed by God to seek the truth and a relationship with our creator (Acts 17:22-31). We can only do this by seeking God first and trusting Him to meet our basic needs (Matt. 6:25-34).

One Faith
We believe that faith comes directly from the word of God (Rom. 10:17) and is vital because faith is necessary to please God (Heb. 11:6). Faith, in essence, is believing that the promises of God will happen just as he said (Rom. 4:21). We also recognize that true faith is demonstrated by actions and not just declarations (James 2:14-17).

One Lord
We believe that Jesus is both our Lord and Master and Christ and King (Acts 2:36). Jesus must be the Lord of our lives (Rom. 10:9) as demonstrated by our actions and not merely our words (cf. Matt. 7:21-23). Recognizing Jesus as the true Lord of our lives involves active self-denial (Luke 9:23-26) and complete loyalty to Jesus’ way of life (Luke 14:25-33).

One Hope
We believe that our true hope in life is a relationship with God that culminates in the resurrection of God’s people (1 Cor. 15). Personal sin separates each one of us from God (Eph. 2:1-13) and leaves us in the darkness (Eph. 5:1-10). The wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23) but in Christ, we have a new birth that provides a living hope (1 Pet. 1:3-4).

One Baptism
We believe that only those who have laid down their own lives and entered into the life of Christ by participating in His death, burial, and resurrection (Rom. 6:1-7) will take part in the new life offered by the grace of God. Baptism is the moment where God’s grace reaches us as we come in contact with the blood of Christ and are united with Him in His resurrection (Col. 2:11-12) and saved (1 Pet. 3:21).

One Gospel
We believe that there is only one gospel and we are not ashamed to preach it to the world (Rom. 1:16). The gospel is the announcement that through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the new creation has been made available to all who would enter into His life (2 Cor. 5:17).

One Body
We believe that Jesus is the head of the body of Christ (Col. 1:15-18) into which each one of us is baptized (1 Cor. 12:13). This body is the family of God in which every member is important and needed for the full life of the community (Romans 12:3-13).

One Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and is given to indwell each believer at our baptism (Acts 2:37-41). The Spirit is given to help us to transform to the image of Christ (2 Cor. 3:17-18; 1 Cor. 6:17-20) and is empowered as we learn to set our mind on what the Spirit desires (Rom. 8:1-17, 26-27). The indwelling Spirit gives us the ability to produce the fruit of keeping God’s new covenant in our lives (Gal. 5:22-25).
